Review: Taltos

Taltos by Steven Brust
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

True Rating: 5 stars for sure!

I’ll be brief with this one, this is an absolutely pivotal book in the Vlad Taltos series, which is one of my favorite fantasy series ever. It’s a grittier series than many fantasy series. Characters generally exist firmly in the “grey areas” of life, so-to-speak.

If you’ve read some of my other reviews of these novels, you’ll get the idea.

Taltos is one of the earlier novels in the series. Chronologically, it’s probably book number 2, though it’s published as book number 4. In this novel, you get to hear the story of how Vlad meets Morrolan, Sethra Lavode, Aliera, and even the demon goddess Verra. Pretty much anything else I tell you about the story would be a spoiler.

This is one of my favorite books in the series. Re-reading it for the first time since the ’90’s was pretty amazing as I’d forgotten so many of the details of those meetings. If you haven’t started the series, and you enjoy reading fantasy series, I’d recommend this series highly. Still would recommend picking up the omnibus The Book of Jhereg as your entry point and start with Jhereg as in the published order.
